This week the Charlton County School system announces its 2019 Teachers of the Year.
Mr. Christopher Craft has been selected by his peers as the Teacher of the Year for Charlton County High School. Beginning his twelfth year of teaching, all in Charlton County (5 years in 7th grade, and 7 years at the High School), Mr. Craft is originally from Savannah, GA. He graduated from Valdosta State University with B.S.Ed in 2008 and received a M.A. in History from Armstrong State University in Savannah in 2014. He is married to Folkston native Ashley Craft and they have a three-year-old son named Quinn. His philosophy of teaching can be summarized as: Teachers believe they have a gift for giving; it consumes them with the same irrepressible drive that drives others to create a work of art or a building. – A. Bartlett Giamatti. Congratulations Mr. Craft!!!

The Class of 2019 at Charlton County High School had the highest CCHS graduation rate in its history since graduation rates began being monitored. Among the nine high schools in the Okefenokee Regional Educational Services Agency (RESA) area, Charlton recorded the second highest graduation rate trailing only Bacon County High School. The Okefenokee RESA includes schools in Ware, Charlton, Clinch, Atkinson, Pierce, Brantley, Coffee, and Bacon counties. The CCHS rate for 2019 was 90.8 percent and exceeds the state average of 82 percent.
The federal Department of Education requires school systems to disaggregate data among subgroups of student populations. For all students the graduation rate was 90.8 percent but when the data are disaggregated for black students, CCHS has the highest graduation rate in the entire Okefenokee RESA area. The graduation rate for black students at CCHS was 94.9 percent compared to the state average of 79.6 percent.

We have a starting guard in the WNBA finals, a defensive back in the NFL, a seventh round pick in the MLB draft, and a NFL Hall of Famer in the same year. There may not be another town in America that can say that. They are Courtney Williams, Chris Milton, L.J. Talley, and Champ Bailey. All four are graduates of CCHS. We are proud of all of them.
