One Tribe, One Goal: Graduation!
Located on the edge of the internationally renowned natural treasure, the Okefenokee Swamp, the Charlton County School System is made up of faculty and staff who realize that the county’s most important treasure is its children. It is our job to work with students, parents, and the community to ensure their success.
To that end, the district serves 1705 students in four schools – St. George Elementary, Bethune Elementary, Folkston Elementary, and Charlton County High – as well as one alternative school. The 254 full time employees work together to provide the best possible experiences that we can for our students. The system is accredited by the Georgia Accrediting Commission (GAC) and complies with the rules, regulations and standards set by the Georgia Department of Education. Charlton County High School is a Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accredited school.
We invite you to visit our schools as we prepare our future leaders for tomorrow!

ADEQUATE YEARLY PROGRESS FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS
******************************************************
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is a measurement of school achievement and is a component of the federal “No Child Left Behind Act.” Schools are rated based on performance of three standards: test participation, academic achievement, and a second indicator. The second indicator for high schools is the graduation rate and for the elementary and middle schools it is the attendance rate. At the high school level the required graduation rate is 75 percent and the absence rate for elementary and middle schools must not exceed 15 percent.
For the 2008-2009 school year, Charlton County High School, Bethune Elementary School, and St. George Elementary School all met adequate yearly progress goals. Folkston Elementary School was the only local school not meeting the requirement this year. In the Okefenokee Regional Educational Services Agency (RESA) area, only Pierce County had all of its schools meet AYP. In fact, 89.8 percent of elementary schools statewide made AYP while only 75.3 percent of middle schools met the benchmark. For high schools, only 47 percent met AYP. In the local RESA area, only Pierce High, Ware Magnet, and Charlton High met AYP.
Locally, Folkston Elementary had the best attendance rate. Only 4.4 percent of FES students missed more than 15 days last year. The FES rate was better than the state average of 5.6 percent. The Class of 2009 at Charlton County High School had the third highest graduation rate among the nine high schools in the RESA area. The Okefenokee RESA includes schools in Ware, Charlton, Clinch, Atkinson, Pierce, Brantley, Coffee, and Bacon counties. Only two high schools in the area (Ware Magnet and Pierce High) exceeded Charlton’s graduation rate of 79.2 percent. The CCHS rate also exceeds the state average of 77.8 percent.
Bethune Elementary School and St. George Elementary School continue to be designated as Title 1 Distinguished Schools. BES has maintained the distinction for nine years and SGES for four years. A school must meet AYP for two consecutive years before being designated as a distinguished school.
More information concerning AYP can be found on the Georgia Department of Education website at www.doe.k12.ga.us.
